Sudoku

The modern version of Sudoku was invented in 1979 when a freelance puzzle constructor from Indianapolis published his “Number Place” puzzle in Dell Magazine’s Pencil Puzzles and Word Games.  Introduced to Japan in 1984 and named Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru, meaning “the numbers must be single” or “the numbers must occur only once.” The puzzle’s name was soon abbreviated to Sudoku.  The Japanese publishers added new innovations to the puzzle, and eventually Sudoku was published in dozens of mainstream periodicals.

Over six years, retired Hong Kong judge Wayne Gould developed a computer program to quickly produce Sudoku puzzles.  He promoted the puzzles to The Times in England, where the game found instant popularity, being dubbed the “fastest growing puzzle” by the world media.

The electronic version of Sudoku requires no pencils or paper and can be played by all ages.  For a fun, portable challenge, arrange the numbers from one to six in rows, columns and region blocks without repeating them.
