The modern version of Sudoku was invented in 1979 when a freelance puzzle designer from Indianapolis published his "Number Place" puzzle in Dell Magazine's Pencil Puzzles and Word Games.

Introduced to Japan in 1984 and named Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru, which means "the numbers must be single" or "the :numbers must occupy only once". The puzzles name was soon abbreviated to Sudoku. The Japanese publishers added new innovations to the puzzle, and eventually Sudoku was published in dozens of mainstream periodicals.

Over six years, retired Hong Kong Judge Wayne Gould developed a computer program to quickly produce Sudoku puzzles. He promoted the puzzles to The Times in Great Britain, where the game found instant popularity, being dubbed the "fastest growing puzzle" by the world media.
